Despite an opening verse that could make the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Anthony Keidis sound like a distuingished professor, System of a Down's "Chop Suey!" contains political, yet pensive lyrics about death amidst an army of chugging guitar riffs. Unlike other artists of the popular late-90s nu-metal craze, System of a Down have a particular sensitivity that makes their music stick with you. Vocalist Serj Tankian's almost operatic singing of the chorus feels well-earned after his aggressively staccato delivery in the beginning. A tension between abrasive and gentle, System of a Down tricked a generation of angst-ridden teens into thinking about their feelings and the world around them. That's certainly a victory worth reveling.
