On “Brave,” Sara Bareilles returns to making the upbeat piano pop that originally launched her career when she released “Love Song” back in 2007. The song talks about self-empowerment without resorting to tired, patronizing cliches (to an extent, after all this is pop music) or taking the message too seriously. Bareille’s piano work is light and she keeps her power vocals to a minimum. While the song certainly has similarities to “Roar,” there’s not really a necessity to choose between #TeamBrave or #TeamRoar. Both songs make their own, distinct path at sharing a similar message, which reminds us how much great vocal deliveries can shape a song.
