Breezy, wistful, and yearning, "California" paints a picture of Joni Mitchell's homesickness for her Lauren Canyon lifestyle while living in France. The song could be considered a west coast companion to Monday's Tune of the Day, James Taylor's "Carolina in My Mind". This connection is even stronger considering that James Taylor plays guitar on "California" as well. While you can feel the languid, humid sun in "Carolina", "California" feels much more temperate. The guitar notes never linger and Mitchell has a peppiness that just can't be conveyed while covered in that Carolina sweat. Either way, both songs make compelling arguments of the places they give homage to, and whichever side you take in this East Coast/West Coast debate is the right side. These are rock classics.
