No one quite knows who actually wrote "Hey Joe." While some musicians claim "Hey Joe" is a traditional folk song, the earliest recording to be found is a 1965 rendition performed by the garage rock band The Leaves. While its origins may seem dubious, it has become a folk song in its own right, inspiring guitarists year after year to learn how to play it. Inspired by this particular version that combines "Hey Joe's" haunting hook with a vibrant psychedelic guitar solo, thousands of guitarists flock to Wroclaw, Poland every year to perform the song in the town square and break a world record. We may never know it's origins, but the unity that "Hey Joe" has formed among thousands of musicians has kept its spirit alive.
