Let’s be honest, Beyonce never had the best track record with ballads. While she can charge up a dancefloor with instant hits like “Drunk in Love” and “Irresistible," she often creates accidental lullabies with her slower songs. “Halo”, however, showed that Beyonce could have a compelling serious side. Those percussive claps, pulsating synths and--of course--Beyonce’s voice all contribute to an arena-sized ballad that’s an assured and touching statement about a divine relationship. When the song was released, Simon Cowell stirred up controversy after stating that the song was originally written for Leona Lewis; but even if that were the case, Beyonce turned "Halo" into something unique.
